GIZ- Biodiversity and Forestry Programme

 As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.

 In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors. GIZ Ethiopia is looking to recruit a field officer for the coordination of activities on site for the implementation of a sustainable supply chains project (with a focus on coffee) for the Biodiversity and Forest, as specified below

         Position: Project coordinator for sustainable supply chain project (focus on coffee)

       Place of Work:   Addis Ababa, with frequent duty trips to Ilu Bator Zone

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The employee has the following main duties and responsibilities:

  • Coordination of the project implementation under the guidance of the head of BFP
  • Analysis of the value chains (focus on coffee value chains, but others are also considered, like honey, beeswax and spices)
  • Communication with stakeholders of the selected supply chain sectors (with a focus on coffee)
  • Coordinate capacity building measures along the value chain
  • Monitoring and reporting on the overall project’s activities’ progress

 

The Specific Tasks

Coordination of the project implementation under the guidance of the project manager

  • To inform all stakeholders about the project
  • To gather and process all incoming information and share it with the interested stakeholders
  • To keep contact with involved Unions, traders, and authorities (mainly the Coffee and tea Authority) involved in the value chain of coffee and others
  • To keep the contact with all projects working in the domain of coffee in Addis Ababa
  • To keep close coordination and synergies with the existent Ethiopian Forest Coffee Project, implemented by BFP
  • To prepare and follow up the project’s annual operational plan
  • To coordinate and supervise the application of approaches and concepts into the project (living income, INA, Sustainable landscapes as sourcing regions and others), in close collaboration with the project manager.
  • To supervise the implementation of digital tools in the supply chains
  • To supervise the application of a coffee fund in coordination with the project manager
  • To coordinate activities in the field and link them with activities in Addis Ababa:
    • To get all information and share
    • To prepare decisions and submit them for action/action response
    • To carry out decisions within the range of responsibilities
    • To prepare plan and accompany missions in the field
    • To write reports and cooperate in all kind of information sharing
  • To assume all kind of communication for this project
  • To represent the Project in platforms and deliver presentations whenever necessary in consultation with superior

 

Analysis of value chains (focus on coffee)

  • To analyse the value chain of coffee from the production to the client/end market
  • To identify gaps and bottle necks in this value chain
  • To address these gaps and try to sort them out in order to contribute to the “formalisation” of the value chain for mutual gains of the actors
  • To cooperate with other projects/ partners to address the solution of problems along the value chain

 

Communication with stakeholders of coffee sector

  • To be aware of what is being done locally and nationally in the coffee sector
  • To technically support the activities of actors in the coffee sector to achieve the projects’ objective
  • To coordinate the establishment of a Global Coffee Platform together with the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority and follow up its implementation
  • To cooperate with the team of other GIZ projects on subjects where cooperation between local, regional and national level is crucial
  • To cooperate with the local government at zonal and Woreda level in the strategic development of the coffee sector in the region
  • To organise travel missions and platforms for discussion among partners and stakeholders

 

Capacity building to the people along the value chain

  • To assess together with the field coordinator the needs for capacity building and skill gaps of beneficiaries
  • To prepare a capacity development strategy
  • To recruit adequately experienced experts to undertake practical training and to monitor their work

 

Monitoring and reporting on the overall project’s activities

  • To establish a monitoring system for the project, in coordination with the field coordinator
  • To establish a reporting system
  • To carry out monitoring and reporting
  • To actively participate in a knowledge management culture
  • To use the knowledge management culture to keep the programme sustainable
  • To follow up budgets and reports on them on a regular basis
  • To take over shared responsibility regarding procedures, rules and regulations of GIZ

Other responsibilities

  • To support the management of the programme (BFP)
  • To ensure that the rules and regulations of GIZ are always respected
  • To take actively part in meetings, workshops etc. on own initiative and on demand
  • To be actively involved in transversal tasks/cross cutting issues (gender, conflict sensitivity, etc.)
  • Assume all other assigned tasks of the superior

Job Requirements

Qualifications required

  • Degree in Economy, NRM, or related subject;
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant occupational experience; expertise in the necessary field or equivalent combination of both.
  • professional experience in project management in an international NGO or donor agency
  • Good understanding of value chain management
  • Understanding of participative forest management, and forest landscape restoration
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience
  • Good mastering of the English and Amharic. Oromifa is an asset
