Job Description

Documenting our GEC Project and Impact through Film, Photography and Stories
ChildHope ChildHope believes every child should enjoy a safe and secure childhood.
We are an international charity based in the UK with significant projects in Africa and Asia supporting children living in some of the poorest communities in the world. In 30 years, we have protected the rights and wellbeing of over 1 million children who are considered the hardest to reach. In many cases we work with groups of children whose numbers and degree of exclusion means they can often be overlooked by larger development programmes and organisations.
To reach these children, we work hand in hand with 17 local NGO partners across 10 countries who have in-depth knowledge of the environment and culture and understand the issues. Together, we ensure these children are safe, healthy, educated and can thrive.
Based on user testing carried out as part of our communications audit in 2017, we learned that people want to see our work and have interests in projects, countries and within larger geographic regions. They have interests in different issues and focus areas and want information about our work and the issues we tackle. They want to understand our impacts and results. Story telling is an important way of doing this. We want build on the formula we now use for showcasing our work which is to present the problem, the intervention and the change, to tell a compelling story about the ways that girls’ lives are changing as a result of our interventions
Purpose of Consultancy
The purpose of this assignment is to highlight our work with our local NGO partner Organisation for Child Development and Transformation (CHADET) in Ethiopia and to gather visual stories of children, families and communities. CHADET has over 20 years’ experience of supporting children living in high-risk contexts and is a well-respected organisation among communities, partners, donors and the government.
Primary school enrolment in Ethiopia has quadrupled since 2010. But girls still face huge barriers to education, particularly in remote areas. Many girls have very poor attendance at primary school, so they perform badly in their exams and are unable to progress to secondary school.
Our project is part of the Department for International Development’s (UKAID) Girls’ Education Challenge (GEC) programme. GEC is helping up to a million of the world’s poorest girls improve their lives through quality education and in finding better ways of getting girls into school. We are supporting GEC in Ethiopia’s two largest regions, Oromia and Amhara. This is the second phase of the project and the emphasis is on preparing girls to transition through the education system, increasing their number of years in school. We are supporting 16,481 girls in 77 schools.
Required Outputs
  • 150-200 photographic images including captioning and editing.
  • One overview film of three minutes showcasing our work with the girls and their communities.
  • Five short films of one minute on key areas and issues.
  • Production of up to 10 written stories of up to 500 words.
These materials will be shared widely with external audiences, in Ethiopia and the UK, across our website and social media and should provide an overview of our GEC project, and the impact of this work on all levels. Hearing from the children participating in the programme and the community members themselves will also be important to illustrate the impact of the project. There are lots of story opportunities: separate toilets for girls and sanitary corners, vocational training, letter-link boxes and Good Brothers’ Clubs and Girls’ Clubs.
Roles and Responsibilities
Given we are seeking to use the skills available in Ethiopia, ChildHope will identify and commission an in-country filmmaker and photographer, who will work closely with CHADET. ChildHope will brief the filmmaker and photographer in consultation with CHADET and Mile 91 regarding work plan, schedule, timeframe and approach to be used. ChildHope will manage the overall planning and implementation process and establish and facilitate contact between the film makers, CHADET and Mile91. It is essential that we agree a filming plan and schedule together, prior to the assignment starting, and agree the powerful stories and thematic cases that both ChildHope and CHADET can use. ChildHope will review and approve the draft and final production of all required outputs in consultation with CHADET.
CHADET will support ChildHope with respect to making enquiries regarding film trip planning and protocols with the Ethiopia’s Communication Affairs Bureau. CHADET will work with Mile91 and ChildHope to complete the groundwork needed to line up the stories, participants and locations including:
  • Coordinating with project staff for field visits to capture the footage.
  • Set interview appointments with key stakeholders, GEC staff and community members.
  • Staff acting as interpreters during local language interviews (if needed).
  • Ensuring the Safeguarding Policy and compliance requirements for all involved are well understood and agreements signed.
As advisory lead consultant, Mile 91 will support ChildHope in the production planning process and provide guidance to CHADET as they plan the itinerary. They will provide overall creative direction by briefing the local audiovisual producers. Specifically, this will include:
Pre preparation support of the trip will be needed working with ChildHope to include client briefing calls/skype and mentoring of CHADET to plan the schedule and to line up the stories.
Drafting of a detailed shoot planning document for the audiovisual team with guidance on the images to capture and aspects of the story to draw out during interviews. Conduct skype briefing meetings in the lead up to the shoot.
Oversee the film editing process.
Producing the written case studies
We are inviting expressions of interest from Ethiopia-based filmmakers and photographers who have the relevant skills and experience. Interested parties can express their interest in either the filmmaking or the photography component separately or they can pitch for both. The team will be expected to travel to communities in Oromia and Amhara region where GEC is being implemented to undertake story gathering activities. The audiovisual producer/s will be expected to deliver the following elements of the production:
  •  Capture a series of interviews on film (including conducting the interview) with schoolgirls and boys, teachers, parents and other community members.
  • Capture a sufficient amount of B Roll footage to illustrate the stories.
  • Capture and caption a set of photography for each of the case study stories.
  • Edit one ‘long’ film (circa three minutes) and five short films (circa one minute).
  • Deliver transcripts and translations for all the interviews.
  • Provide all the RAW footage on a hard drive (to be provided) at the end of the job.

Note: project areas will be assigned beforehand and ChildHope will provide reference material, including project documents. Mile 91 will provide example short films, guidance on photography look and feel and required questions for the interviewees.

The duration of the shoot is expected to be one/two weeks, including travel from Addis Ababa with some degree of flexibility in relation to management of logistics. We envision the shoot will take place during November. Exact dates to be confirmed.
