Gender Equality Coordinator-Maternity Cover

Plan International Ethiopia is looking for  Gender Equality Coordinator- for 4 months Maternity Cover. The successful candidate will be based in Addis Ababa  and  will be reporting to the  Project Lead (My Choice for My Life).

Dimensions of the Role

  • Provide direct support and oversight to the implementation and monitoring of project Gender Equality Strategy, in line with Plan’s new global transformative agenda and Country CSP Gender Equality agenda, and Global Affairs Canada’s new Feminist International Assistance Policy.
  • Support the effective monitoring, evaluation and learning of gender equality activities and outcomes, including the production of technical documents, reports
  • Support relevant engagement and advocacy on gender equality related to access to quality health/CP services and information.
  • Build the capacity of all project and partner staff on gender equality and inclusion, in particular CEFM/ASRHR
  • Act in other capacities as agreed with supervisor.


Key End Results and typical Responsibilities

Quality Management

  • Create, review and/or revise key technical documents in support of the project, including trainings, reports, programming guidelines, communications products, tools, training manuals and modules
  • Ensure consistent and quality application of gender equality strategic goals throughout sexual and reproductive health and rights programming, child protection programming
  • Ensures consistent and high technical quality of project activities as delivered by Plan and partner staff; identifies and addresses needs for quality improvement on an ongoing basis.
  • Foster strong relationships and work closely with internal and external stakeholders on gender equality and health/CP sector work to keep abreast of key policy changes and relevant external issues
  • Ensure strong linkages with the Governance and Monitoring, Evaluations and Research (MER) unit within the project so that advocacy on gender and inclusion initiatives and reports are based on evidence.
  • Represent Plan at meetings and events where necessary.
  • Design and deliver ongoing needs-based capacity building trainings and workshops to project staff and implementing partners.
  • Assume any other responsibility as assigned by supervisor

Policy, Research and Networking

  • Provide technical support to the representation of the project at the regional and national level and contribute to the visibility of project activities and results in relevant forums and networks in the area of Gender Equality or as delegated.
  • Lead gender equality advocacy initiatives related to the project.
  • Ensure quality technical input into and support creation of MEL documents and publications

Communications and Working Relationships:

  • Prepare and submit relevant activity reports based on agreed timelines to supervisor.
  • Provide timely responses concerning queries linked with relevant project implementation.
  • Work amicably with Plan International Colleagues working at different levels of the project (CO, CNO, PAs, and possibly RESA).
  • Ensure all information, publicity and fundraising material recognises and respects the dignity of the affected persons.

Key relationships

To maximize overall program impact through the optimized contributions of others, the post holder will be required to initiate, develop and maintain a range of working relationships, including with government counterparts, implementing partners and other development organizations within the region.

Effective working relationships within the program unit are also essential. The job holder will have frequent communication with Plan staff both at PA & CO, and with various internal staff networks

Job Requirements

Technical expertise, skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to achieve role’s objectives:

Required Knowledge and Experience :

  • Graduate degree social studies discipline, preferably post-graduate (master’s or higher) Degree in a gender equality, human rights, development studies – specializing on gender and development or social development related discipline.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in the development sector, including field and management experience.
  • Advanced professional development and experience in gender equality programming and sexual and reproductive health/rights programming.
  • Excellent knowledge of child and women’s rights and gender justice, particularly relating to sexual and reproductive health rights and child, early and forced marriage.
  • Significant experience leading gender equality, inclusion in complex international organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and delivering workshops and trainings on gender equality that are participatory and needs-based.
  • Compelling influencer and communicator – able to inspire, build consensus and bring people together around a common agenda.
  • Experience with a diverse set of stakeholders at all levels of an organization, including from policy-makers and senior management to local government and implementing partners, as well as community leaders and beneficiaries.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, collaboration experience, creativity and willingness to innovate
  • Experience drafting project reporting and monitoring project progress

  Physical Environment and Demands:

  • Frequent travel to Program activities in Amhara and SNNPR to provide support where necessary.

  Child Protection and Gender Inclusion

  • Ensures that the Child Protection Policy (CPP) is fully embedded in accordance with the CPP Implementation standards as applicable to their area of responsibility.
  • Ensure that global policies for Child Protection and Gender Equality & Inclusion are fully reflected in relevant tasks, trainings and documents created and delivered.

Level of Contact with Children:

High contact – the job responsibilities of this position require the post holder to have very frequent contact with children. Hence, it is expected that children shall be protected at all times.
