Job Description


The Millennium Water Alliance (MWA) is a permanent coalition of leading humanitarian and private organizations that convenes, integrates, and influences critical players in the business, technology, government and NGO sectors to supply safe drinking water and sanitation (WASH) to millions of the world’s poorest people in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Founded in 2002, MWA tests, innovates and scales effective and sustainable solutions towards this goal.  


The Project Coordinator will work closely with the MWA Ethiopia team, the MWA Global team and implementing partners to implement the Sustainable WASH Project (SWP) led by MWA and funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation through 2024 in Ethiopia. This position will be located in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, with extensive work across the Amhara region, specifically in Dera, Farta and North Mecha woredas. The main activities of this position are to coordinate the project work in the region and support monitoring and documentation of activities, changes, challenges and learnings.   


  • Reports to: MWA Ethiopia Country Director
  • Other vital relationships:
    • Internal : key relationships with MWA Global Program Director, MWA Communications Director, and full MWA Ethiopia team
    • External : strong collaborative relationships with MWA Ethiopia members; regional, zonal and woreda government; and other WASH sector actors in Amhara region


Programme Implementation and Technical Assistance

  • With support from the Country Director, Global Program Director and other program staff, ensure that the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation (CNHF) program in Ethiopia is implemented in high-quality way with a focus on timely achievement of deliverables, putting government at the center and focusing on innovation and learning
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of all longer term technical goals, objectives and activities of  the Sustainable WASH Project in Amhara region
  • Ensure that the different technical aspects of the project are coordinated, integrated and support each other to optimize results and impact
  • Manage MWA’s regional hub-roles including: arranging regular meetings, preparing agendas, facilitating sessions, documenting outcomes, following-up on actions, responding to difficulties or questions, etc.
  • Look for and report opportunities where members and program teams need assistance obtaining technical support or capacity development
  • Convene and lead regular regional level meetings such as the Regional Program Team and technical working group
  • Support development of necessary project reports for donors, board, etc.
  • Support budgeting, planning and all other activities needed for the CNHF project
  • Develop and support regional and woreda influencing strategies and take the lead in coordinating the implementation of those
  • Lead program relationship development activities with regional, zonal and district government officials and supporting government in Achieving their WASH goals.

Knowledge Management

  • Collect, analyse and share practices and ideas from the project implementation that need to be disseminated for mutual learning
  • Support Knowledge Management so that all program minutes, reports, events, and proposals are properly documented, accurately labelled and stored in a shared MWA repository
  • Share lessons learned or interesting findings with MWA Ethiopia and MWA US team to facilitate knowledge management and development of communications materials
  • Support MWA members/partners in documenting and sharing research, pilots, innovations and lessons learned
  • Participate and actively engage in the identification, documentation and dissemination of success stories, lessons learned and best practices in consultation with other MWA Ethiopia team members
  • Write brief story documents annually to leverage program-based evidence for advocacy and development and learning purposes
  • Develop learning documents per year and support district partners to develop at least 6 communications and/or learning documents annually
  • Coordinate workshops/meetings in collaboration with program/country offices by country or region or topic to facilitate knowledge sharing.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL)

  • Manage monitoring and learning activities of the program and ensure timely collection, review and sharing of information with partners, donors, MWA US and other entities as needed
  • Engage in systems monitoring using the building block analysis and other systems monitoring tools
  • Oversee development, execution and periodic review of program MEL
  • Convene regular regional or woreda learning events to ensure that all members and government partners are getting learning value from the program
  • Utilize program learnings to influence modifications to the program to increase program value
  • Support MEL personnel in analysis of field data to be used in program reporting, learning and program improvements, including qualitative and quantitative statistical analysis and narrative evidence from MWA programs.
  • Membership Value-add
  • Provide and promote regular communication and coordination among MWA Ethiopia staff and MWA members field offices and government stakeholders at different levels in the country working in the Amhara region and with MWA US and Addis Ababa staff
  • Engage in frequent communication with MWA program partners at regional and woreda levels members to ensure collaborative relationships and shared value to bring collect impact
  • Seek ways to provide and improve value for MWA members through the above objectives and other opportunities that are developed

Additional Responsibilities

  • Notice, understand and resolve any issues that develop between members or within the MWA Ethiopia programs
  • Represent MWA at regional/woreda events
  • Additional duties as needed to support successful project coordination and completion

Job Requirements


  • Bachelors or Masters degree in environmental, development, engineering, public health, or similar field of study with at least 7 years in design and implementation of programs in development context.  Experience with international NGOs or UN Agencies is an added advantage
  • Good understanding of Ethiopian government policies and structures related to WASH sector
  • Experience in partnership development, maintaining strong professional relationships and effective at diplomatic communications
  • Strong ability to communicate (written and oral) and present publicly in both English and Amharic
  • Experience in engaging with government and civil society
  • Experience working on systems strengthening approach (policies, resources, capacity development, etc.)
  • Detail-oriented and able to manage many different tasks to be completed on time
  • Experience in convening and leading meetings and leading teams towards a shared vision
  • Experience/skills in implementing strategic plans
  • Effective negotiator with the ability to positively influence cross-departmental and cross-sector working
  • Good understanding and knowledge of social inclusion, gender equity and diversity
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours depending on travel and pressing needs of the program
  • Commitment to and understanding of MWA vision and mission and principles guiding the alliance
Ability to analyse information and transform it into both technical and non-technical written documents or presentations
